Stuck without electricity for a few days recently I turned to an old faithful, the BBC World Service, on a cheap portable radio I picked up – without thinking – some time ago. The reception was poor. It probably had to do with the fact that the old wireless was really cheap, but it slipped into a pocket easily.

I lost the old Grundig I had many years ago (I dropped it from an elevated ledge onto rocks and a river below) then I turned almost completely to the internet for connection to radio broadcasts. I would be pleasantly surprised if radio broadcasting on FM/AM/SW bands were still available. I’m probably being terribly nostalgic, but there is great value, and pleasure mind you, from turning on a (battery-operated) wireless on a camping trip – or anywhere for that matter. I should consider getting another, better, one.
